At Burnley Park Play, we’re lucky to have some truly passionate leaders who make each session a fun and welcoming experience. This blog is written by Susan, one of our fantastic Park Play Leaders and now an ambassador, who shares her journey—from discovering Park Play to encouraging others to join in the fun!

What is Park Play?
Park Play is a nationwide movement aimed at creating healthier, happier communities through play. Whether you’re 3 or 71, Park Play welcomes everyone to come rain or shine. Each session is a mix of structured and unstructured games, giving participants the chance to meet new people, engage in friendly competition, and just enjoy being active outside.

Why I Got Involved
I first came across Park Play through the Burnley Leisure and Culture Facebook page, and the concept immediately resonated with me. As a primary school teacher and a sports enthusiast, I love encouraging children to step outside their comfort zones and rediscover the joy of movement. I am relatively new to the North and hoped joining Park Play would help me meet like minded individuals and get to know more people locally.
Growing up, I loved team sports, but as I got older, I was often told I wasn’t “good enough,” which led me to shy away from activities I once enjoyed. It took me years to rebuild my confidence and get back into sports. Today, I play in two netball teams and even run ultra-marathons for fun!
For me, Park Play is a gateway for children and adults alike to explore sports in a non-judgmental, inclusive environment. It’s a chance to try new activities, make friends, and simply enjoy the freedom of outdoor play.

Why You Should Join Us!
Park Play isn’t just about exercise; it’s about building a sense of community. Each session is carefully structured to be engaging and fun:
- Arrive & Explore (30 mins): Everyone can register and dive into different games and equipment at their own pace.
- Meet (15 mins): Small group games led by play leaders to encourage interaction.
- Move (Varied time): A mix of activities, from Frisbee to tag rugby, to keep everyone active.
- Play (Final session): More games aimed at developing skills and having fun.
At the end of some sessions, parents are encouraged to stick around, chat, and share a warm drink. It’s all about building relationships and fostering a welcoming atmosphere.
So, if you’re looking for a free, fun, and energetic way to spend your weekend, come down to Scott Park in Burnley every Saturday from 10 AM – 12 PM.
