Tree Planting

Tree planting is at the heart of Burnley’s commitment to creating a greener, healthier, and more resilient town. The Council’s Greenspaces Team works closely with local residents, volunteers, and partner organisations to care for our existing green spaces and shape new ones for future generations. From supporting local ecology and boosting biodiversity to taking meaningful climate action and enhancing pride in our neighbourhoods, trees deliver countless benefits that enrich our environment and our community.

The Green Activities Coordinator plays a key role in this work, collaborating with schools and local businesses to deliver tree planting sessions across school grounds and business sites. Businesses and organisations can also make a wider impact by supporting community planting days as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) commitments, helping to strengthen Burnley’s natural landscape while building team spirit and giving back locally.

How to get involved?

If you’re a school looking to expand your outdoor learning opportunities, or a business wanting to make a positive environmental impact, we’d love to work with you. Get in touch with our Green Activities Coordinator ( hnazareth-kay@burnley.gov.uk) to arrange a tree planting session or to discuss how your organisation can support community planting projects.

Below is a short video showcasing a local company taking part in a tree planting CSR day. Their enthusiasm, teamwork, and commitment to Burnley’s #OutdoorTown highlight the powerful difference organisations can make when they get involved.

Beat the Street Tree Planting

Beat the Street added a new dimension when it came to Burnley in 2023. Not only did players earn points which helped individuals and teams climb the leaderboards, but their points also earned trees. 2,000 points earned = 1 tree.

Through travelling actively and earning points, over 2,500 trees were earned in 2023 and players, schools and community groups were invited back to help plant them across the borough.

A partnership between Burnley Leisure and Culture and Burnley Borough Council also helped to secure additional funding through Trees for Cities, which not only saw the planting of trees earned through playing Beat the Street, but saw 7,500 trees being planted across the borough during the November 2023 – March 2024 tree planting season.

This successful community approach was repeated during the 2025 Beat the Street game, where participants earned an additional 1,946 trees. These trees, again will be planted by local residents, schools, and organisations, further strengthening Burnley’s green network and building on the town’s growing commitment to climate action and community-led environmental improvement.

The combination of tree planting and active community engagement helps foster a sense of pride of place and promotes healthier, more vibrant spaces for our residents to own and enjoy.
